<image:title>Blogs - Survival Tips For Your First Year of College - Organization: Everyone has their own way of organizing their day to day routines. Definitely make sure to get a calendar of some kind. Some people like an old fashioned wall calendar or paper planner to carry around. Others prefer an electronic calendar that comes with reminders or you may have both. Just make sure to have something to organize your day to day to do list. Find a balance as well. While it can be good to stay organized, it can be super counterproductive to have every single hour of your day planned. Build in flexibility where there is not always something filling your time. Remember you also have to have time to use the bathroom, eat and transition from one thing to the next. College can be such an exciting time but also very stressful. Be gentle with yourself and remember that you are adjusting to a whole new normal way of living. Things don’t just fall into place. You have to be patient and meet yourself where you’re at. If you’re looking for therapy support, feel free to reach out. I work out of Northfield, MN, and also offer online therapy for those doing college life elsewhere.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blogs - How to Work on Acceptance</image:title>
<image:caption>Acceptance does not mean resignation; it means understanding that there are aspects of life we cannot change. This understanding empowers you to focus on what you can control—your actions, your attitude, and your perspective. By doing so, you invite growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you. Embrace this journey with an open heart and mind, and remember that acceptance is not a destination but a continual process of learning and evolving.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Knowing the Stages of Change Can Help Normalize Your Recovery Process - Have you ever opened up to a family member, friend or professional about a difficult change you are trying to make and they respond with supportive feedback or advice that just doesn’t match where you’re at in your change process? This mismatch can cause guilt, shame and confusion for the person considering change. Experiencing two conflicting desires about the problematic behavior(s) does not have to be difficult to navigate and understand. This article gives a brief overview of the stages of change as well as how understanding this can be helpful in your change process.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Knowing the Stages of Change Can Help Normalize Your Recovery Process - Precontemplation: You are in this stage when the problematic behavior is not viewed as problematic to you or may be in your subconscious versus conscious awareness. People in your life may express their concerns but you do not feel the same way. In many ways, the behavior(s) are providing more benefit than harm from your point of view. Contemplation: In this stage, you have moved into the awareness that the behavior is problematic and are experiencing ambivalence about changing. You are not taking any action steps that are noticeable but are wrestling with this internally. Preparation: When you have gained awareness of your problem, gone over the pros and cons of taking or not taking action, you start to prepare yourself for changes. At this stage, you might be sharing more with people, scheduling more appointments with providers and organizing how you plan to keep yourself accountable. Action: At this point, you are interrupting your targeted behavior(s) and implementing strategies/skills to replace it. You are intentional day to day about how you respond to your emotions, thoughts and experiences without using the previous behavior(s). Lapses can happen where you regress back but you can more quickly identify this and redirect yourself. Maintenance: In this stage, you have sustained using desired behaviors in place of the problematic ones. You resist any urges that arise with more ease and continue to get more confident in responding in healthy ways to your thoughts, feelings and experiences.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blogs - New Year’s Resolutions in Eating Disorder Recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>Acknowledge what the eating disorder has taken: Set time aside to write down, meditate, daydream, or verbalize the ambiguous loss surrounding the times you were enmeshed with your eating disorder (ED). There are times in recovery and when struggling with your ED, you minimize the negative consequences and romanticize the ED. Be honest with yourself and take note of all that ED took from you. Consider all the learning you could have done during the depths of your ED as it took up so much brain space. Think about the relationships your eating disorder has impacted. When your focus was mostly on your body and food, you were missing out on being present with people in your life. ED often has negative physical consequences as well. Do you remember the lack of focus, energy, and other physical consequences your ED provided? The list goes on and on but let’s move on to how you can refocus your New Year’s resolutions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Grounding Tools For Dysregulation - Examples of grounding tools: Exhale with a sigh - When your emotions and body sensations feel out of control, you can always come back to your breath. This is an undervalued skill and is easily available. There are several different breathing techniques to learn and practice but one of the easiest is to sigh through your exhale which automatically activates the body’s relaxation response (parasympathetic nervous system - PNS). You can also imagine inhaling a word like, “peace” through your nose and exhaling a word like, “stress” through your mouth. Use your senses - Relying on your senses can quickly bring you back to the present moment and into a sense of safety. Using descriptive words, name 5 things you see nearby, 4 things you can touch (hair on cheek, wind on face…), 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell and 1 thing you can taste. Take perfection off the table while using these tools. You might use a handful of the above which is just fine. Humming - Engaging the vocal cords stimulates the body’s relaxation response. You can do this through singing, humming or chanting. Splash cold water on your face or over your hands - Notice the sound of the water and the way it feels against your skin. Music - Find your favorite song - something peaceful or uplifting to help you feel more grounded. Drink something hot or cold - Grab your drink nearby and gargle or make a soothing cup of hot tea to help relax your body. If you’re drinking tea, the scent can also help bring you into the present moment. Touch the ground - If possible, take your socks and shoes off. Notice how your feet feel as they touch the ground. Nature can have a significant and positive impact. Progressive muscle relaxation - Squeeze certain parts of your body and release. Do this with several parts of your body starting from the top of your head or the bottom of your feet. Notice how this feels as you transition from tightening to loosening those parts. Visualization - Imagine your feet are roots and you are the tree or picture yourself turning down an emotional volume knob when you are experiencing big emotions. You can also imagine a peaceful place and identify what you picture in your mind. Hold an object - Spin the ring on your finger around and notice the sensations, hold a rock and notice its textures and colors or pet an animal. amazon affiliate link: These rings are my favorite to have in my therapy office for my clients to use. Use a mantra - Repeat something like, “I am safe here and now” or, “these feelings will shift and change.” Movement - Slowly walk and focus on the transition from heel to toe, heel to toe, heel to toe. You can sway, rock, stretch, dance, jump or engage in any movement that helps ground you.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - How To Tell People About Your Mental Health Struggle - Tips for who, what, when and how: Decide who: Think about your potential support network. Besides professional support, who in your life can you lean on when you are struggling and why do they stand out to you? Think about what they have done to earn your trust and how they have shown up in your relationship. Also consider those who you do not want to share this with and ask yourself why. What have they done or not done to reinforce this feeling? Consider pros/cons: Write down the pros and cons of telling certain people and pros and cons of not telling them. Decide which side carries more weight and go with that.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - How To Tell People About Your Mental Health Struggle - Think about the worst and best case scenarios: Set yourself up to be prepared for different possibilities. Ask yourself how you will respond to potential reactions. Self care: Have something in mind for self care after this chat. This does not have to be big. It could be taking a bath, going to bed early, watching your favorite movie or taking a peaceful walk in your neighborhood. You might be raw right after sharing something so vulnerable. It is important to nurture yourself. Pat yourself on the back: Sharing your mental health struggle with people is emotional work. Telling trusted supporters about your mental health concerns is part of the recovery work, so give yourself credit.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Feeling Your Feelings - Why feeling your feelings matters:</image:title>
<image:caption>When you slow down and nonjudgmentally create space for your emotions, you naturally become more aware of your feelings and allow them to process. This gives you an opportunity to learn and grow. Becoming more aware of your emotions creates more flexible and thoughtful reactions. This means you can live in a way that aligns more with your values. You can alter a defensive or snap response to a more grounded, compassionate and open one. Feeling your feelings can also allow difficult emotions to pass much more smoothly than when they are denied, judged or avoided.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Feeling Your Feelings - Identify the physical sensations in your body: Increase your awareness of what sensations you notice. Where do you feel tension, tightness, discomfort, pain, or other sensations? These could potentially be connected to your emotions. Radically accept the physical sensations and avoid judging or trying to figure out why the sensations are present. Just notice and be with them. Gain language around feeling words: Download an emotion wheel and save it somewhere in your phone so you can pull it out frequently and identify what emotions are present. Do this and number one daily and it will become more automatic over time. Practice non judgment: Instead of judging the emotions, radically accept they are a part of the human experience and invite them into your awareness. Respond with compassion: Imagine turning towards your younger self or your emotions themselves and embrace them with a hug or wrap them in a blanket. Nurture them with love and kindness. Validate your experience: Unlearn the unhelpful messages you received about emotions by saying something like, “It’s hard to feel X. You are struggling and that’s okay.” Engage your body: Find something soothing or releasing for your body. This is different for everyone but could be crying, talking, singing, humming, exercise or taking a bath. Your body is where the emotions are stored, so remember to allow your body to be a part of the feeling work as well. The more you practice the above, the easier and more efficient the process becomes. Feeling your feelings will help you become more in tune with your inner guide and make decisions that align with your values.</image:title>
